NEMT drivers work in close contact with passengers and may encounter blood or other potentially infectious materials after a fall, medical event, nosebleed, needlestick, or contaminated spill. Training helps drivers recognize exposure risk and avoid unsafe improvisation.

What OSHA says about bloodborne pathogens
OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030, applies when employees have occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Covered employers have responsibilities that extend beyond assigning a course, including an exposure control plan, engineering and work-practice controls, personal protective equipment, training, and post-exposure evaluation and follow-up.
Whether the federal standard applies to a particular worker or organization depends on the work and circumstances. Employers should evaluate occupational exposure and applicable federal or state-plan requirements. An online certificate by itself does not fulfill every employer obligation.
